NanoWatt Design LLC gets $70,000 Grant- September 2011

The Arkansas Science & Technology Authority on Monday said it awarded NanoWatt Design, LLC of Fayetteville $70,000 to further the development and commercialization of a microchip technology. The microchip circuit architecture has a broad range of applications capable of extending battery life in devices ranging from cell phones to pacemakers, a news release said.
Nano Watt chips use only 20 percent of the power compared with most state of the art designs in the semi-conductor industry.

2.15 Million Business Accelerater Award September 2011 Winrock International and the University of Arkansas have been awarded a $2.15 million federal grant to launch a business accelerator in northwest Arkansas.

The winning program is launching the ARK: Acceleration, Resources, Knowledge— and was one of the 20 national winners of the $37 million Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge launched earlier this year by the Obama Administration in an effort to spur job growth by supporting regional industry clusters. The challenge drew 150 applicants from across the U.S.
ARK will support information technology in three clusters in northwest Arkansas and surrounding counties in Oklahoma and Missouri: transportation and logistics, food processing, and retail. Towards that end, ARK will introduce two job acceleration boot camps to NW Arkansas, each lasting two weeks and each involving 15 startup companies recruited nationally for relocation to Fayetteville. At the boot camps, companies will develop intellectual properties related to one of the three industry clusters and compete for a $150,000 prize in addition to a contract for implementation locally of the IFP.

Fayetteville Sales Tax Revenue Soars :September 2011

Sales tax revenue soared into double digits this month for Rogers, Fayetteville and Springdale , while Bentonville reported a more modest increase. Sales tax revenue reported in September reflect July tax collected in August. Comparisons are based on collection from the same month in the previous year.Each city, with the exception of Bella Vista, collects a 2 percent sales tax . One percent is devoted to repayment of bonds. The other 1 percent goes into each city’s general fund and is available for operations. For the purposes of the current report, the one percent going into the general fund for each city was tracked. Rogers had the greatest percentage of increase in sales tax, compared with last year, at 19.8 percent. Fayetteville had the next highest percentage increase at 14.7 percent. The city received $1,388,999 compared with $1,211,184 last September, a $177,815 increase.

ASTA Awards Funds to 3 NWA Emerging Companies to Develop New Technologies (September 2011)

The Arkansas Science & Technology Authority has awarded seed investments to three firms for commercialization of research in breast cancer detection, disease diagnosis and development of nanofiber-based filters. BioDetection Instruments received a $150,000 investment to further develop its Aegis 1000 biosensor system that company officials say can diagnose disease within 20 minutes as oppsed to one to three days when a sample is sent to an outside lab. Ascendant Diagnostics received $100,000 to develop its method of screening tears for early detection of breast cancer. The method is noninvasive and pain-free. Company officials believe the technology is more accurate than mammography and is able to detect cancer sooner and at a lower cost. TiFiber also received $100,000 to commercialize its patent-pending technlogy that will create nanofiber-based filters that are more durable and effective than current filters. ASTA works to support entrepreneurs engaged in creating high paying knowledge-based jobs in Arkansas.

AT&T to Invest $4.5 Million On Mobile Coverage at UA (September 2011)

AT&T Corp. announced a $4.5 million investment designed to strengthen its mobile broadband coverage at the University of Arkansas' Reynolds Razorback Stadium and Bud Walton Arena. The investment allows the addition of nine cell sites surrounding the UA and 170 antennae inside the football stadium. Upgrades also have been made inside Walton Arena. As a result, people attending games and associated events will experience a higher quality of services in terms of faster data speeds and faster acces to the internet. AT&T also announced enhancements to a total of 81 cell sites in Benton and Washington counties. Additionally, it upgraded 10 cell sites between Alma and Fayetteville.

Adventure Subaru Dealership Plans Move To I-540 (July 2011)

Adventure Subaru in Fayetteville which is currently located at 2781 N College will be moving closer to I-540. The dealership is expected to break ground for its new location on North Shiloh Dr, along Interstate 540 near the Porter Road exit. The Nelms family, which owns the dealership and property, hopes to move into the new facility by the end of the year or the first quarter of 2012. The new location is about 20,000 SF on 4.5 acres. It is quite a bit larger than the current facility of 13,000 SF and 2.3 acres. The company wants to double the size of their used-car operation and will likely add a few positions to their current staff of 18. H2 Engineering Inc. of Fayetteville is the engineering company for this new facility. The architects are Miller Boskus Lack of Fayetteville and the landscape architect is Melissa Evans of EB Landworks Inc. also from Fayetteville.

Goodwill Industries to Open a Store in Fayetteville (July 2011)

Goodwill Industries of Arkansas, Inc. will open its first Fayetteville store in late July. The 20,000 SF facility is located at 3105 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and will include a donation center and a Career Services Center. The organization expects to hire about 30 people to staff the new store. Staff includes sales staff, store managers and a Career Services Center manager who will oversee all of the Career Services Centers in Northwest Arkansas. The nonprofit organization depends on sales at its thrift stores to fund job-service programs for people with disabilities and other special needs. The Goodwill's donation center on Steamboat Dr in Fayetteville will remain open. Goodwill has a 25,000 SF store in Springdale, a 12,000 SF store in Bentonville, and a donation center in Bella Vista.

Fayetteville Circuit City Building Sold (June 2011)

The former Circuit City building at 744 E Joyce Blvd, near the Northwest Arkansas Mall, has just been sold to a small investment group from Atlanta, GA. The deal closed June 8th. The building is 210,000 SF and was built in 1998. It is the perfect spot for retail. The investor group is in discussions with several nationally known retailers now.

Acumen Holdings Expands (June 2011)

Acumen Holdings Inc. is a success story for business is booming for them. Acumen, which began with one consumer website and 3 brands, is now operating 8 sites with 239 brands. The company started with 4 employees and 2,000 SF and 2 years ago expanded into a 10,000 SF space at Nelson's Crossing. They recently moved again, this time with 54 employees to a 60,000 SF building. The company hopes to go public in 3 years.

Zaxby's Franchisee Buys 2nd Fayetteville Store (June 2011)

Tasty Holdings LLC of Athens, GA, acquired the 1.5 acre property at 3251 N College Ave. The property has a 4,364 SF building on it. Tasty Holdings LLC owns four Zaxby's restaurants in northwest Arkansas: in Siloam Springs, Fayetteville, Bentonville and Springdale. Partners Brian Driggers and David Jackson are the franchisees for all of them.

Evelyn Hills Shopping Center Signed Several New Tenants (May 2011)

Fayetteville's mid-town Evelyn Hills Shopping Center has signed several new tenants within the last couple of months. Family Dollar is set to open a store there on May 19th. White's Jewelry and an African imports store called Treasures of Africa also are on the way. Powerhouse Gym and Fitness Center just opened last month.

JC Penny $3 Million Remodel (April 2011)

JC Penny store at the Northwest Arkansas Mall in Fayetteville is currently undergoing a $3 million remodeling project. The 120,000 SF store opened in 1996. Remodel work include a full service boutique; an updated jewelry department; a modernized shoe department; new carpet and tile; and improvements to fitting rooms and restrooms.

Slim Chicken's Opens Another Store (April 2011)

Slim's Chicken's opened another store in Fayetteville. The new location is in Spring Creek Centre at 637 E Joyce Blvd., Ste. 20. The 3,300 SF restaurant will have about 25 employees and seat for 90 customers. This is the 9th Slim Chicken's in Arkansas and Oklahoma with about 200 employees. Ryan Hodson, Greg Smart and Tom Gordon opened the first restaruant in 2003 on College Avenue in Fayetteville. The company is exploring franchising possibilities.

A New McDonald's Under Construction (April 2011)

A new McDonald's is under construction to replace an old one. Originally opened in April 1970, the restaurant at 1641 N College Ave was razed in January and will be replaced by a new, state of the art faciltiy with dual, 24 hours drive-thrus, according to Mathews Management. The new restaurant,set to open in June, will be 4,000 SF and have seating for 72 customers. It will feature a Bose sound system, HD television and free Wi-Fi. The restaurant will employ about 50 employees. Mathews Management operates 33 McDonald's in Northwest Arkansas, Southwest Missouri and Northeast Oklahoma.

Athletes To Get More Space (April 2011)

Arkansas Athletes Outreach recently broke ground to begin construction on its $2.5 million P. Whitaker Sports Center in Fayetteville. The 40,000 SF indoor sports center will be an expansion of its facilities at 1515 Burr Oak Dr, south of the Washington County Fairgrounds. The addition will house 6 courts for basketball or valleyball, a concession area, a speed school for athletic training and a Sport Leadership Center. Opening is planned for September. The general contractor fo this project is Pick It Construction from Fayetteville.

Superior Industries Keeps Rolling (March 2011)

Fayetteville's automotive aluminum wheel manufacturer, Superior Industries, saw net sales skyrocket 72% last year, jumping from $418.8 million in 2009 to $719.5 million in 2010. As a result, the company turned a gross profit of $89.2 million in 2010 compared to a loss of $10.2 million in 2009. Net income was a positive $51.6 million. Superior's local employment in the 4th quarter hit 1,440 in the Fayetteville and Roger plants.

Foreign Students Impact Local Economy (February 2011)

A recent study at the University of Arkansas found that International students at the UA account for about one-third of the $75.1 million of the statewide economic impact. Those students contributed $25.4 million to the Northwest Arkansas economy last year. The impact does not include funding from U.S. sources, such as scholarships. In the fall of 2010, the University had 1,156 international students, which account for roughly 5.4% of the 21,400 total student population. (Source: Arkansas Democrat Gazette)

First Baptist Church Expansion (February 2011)

First Baptist Church of Fayetteville is building a two-story, 30,481 SF building adjacent to its building. Commerce Construction Co. of Springdale is the general contractor for this $3.25 million project. Northwest Electric Inc. of Fayetteville is the electrical contractor while Johnson Mechanical Contractors, also of Fayetteville, is the plumbing contractor. Miller Boskus Lack Architects from Fayetteville, is the architect on the project. The building will be used for collegiate education and youth activity space. The project is scheduled for a September completion.

New Waffle House Moving In (Jan 2011)

A new Waffle House is under construction in the Underwood Plaza building at 609 W Dickson St. The business is scheduled to open in mid- to late February. This restauratn will become one of three Waffle Houses in the country to be in a university entertainment-life setting. The store is expected to hire 25-30 employees.

HuHot Opens In Fayetteville (Jan 2011)

HuHot Mongolian Grill opened at 637 E Joyce Blvd, Ste. 104 in front of Home Depot. The popular HuHot franchise allows customers to choose meats, seafood, noodles and vegetables plus Asian sauces from mild to hot. The customized mixes are then cooked on the grill as the customers watch. The location is one of three HuHot grills operated by Sirius Hospitality LLC which is based in Columbia, MO.

Fayetteville to Get A Second Family Dollar Store (Jan 2011)

Discount retailer Family Dollar will open a second store in Fayetteville in early spring. The store will be located in Evelyn Hills Shopping Center next to the Chinese restaurant East Buffet. Evelyn Hills is across College Avenue from the Veteran's Administration hospital. According to Josh Braverman, Family Dollar spokesman, stores typically employ five to seven workers. The store has approximately 7,000 SF. Company officials said they plan on opening approximately 300 new stores, and closing between 80 and 100 stores. Family Dollar has one store in Fayetteville at 1632 S. Schoool Ave. The company has seven more stores in Northwest Arkansas.

Fayetteville Startup Gets US Grant (Jan 2011)

BiologicsMD of Fayetteville has received a $2.3 million grant from the US Department of Defense to further develop a drug for osteoporosis. According to company president, Paul Mlakar Jr., the grant will be spent over two years and pay for tesing of the drug and to shepherd it through the early stages of the US Food and Drug Administration approval process. The drug is designed to reverse the effects of osteoporosis by growing new bones.The company hopes it ultimately will be delivered as a shot, once or twice a year. The technology was licensed from the University of Arkansas. BiologicsMD has six employees and was founded in January 2009. Fifty seven such grants were awarded in a field of 607 applications.

Hospital Opens a New Joint Center (Jan 2011)

Washington Regional Medical Center has opened a Total Joint Center to care for and educate patients undergoing knee and hip replacement surgeries. The 18 bed unit features pre-operative educational classes and limited post-surgery physical therapy. Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville operates a 366-bed hospital at 3215 N North Hills Blvd, in addition to physician offices and specialty clinics. It employs more than 2,100 people. The hospital is a community-owned and locally governed non-profit organization.

NanoMech Of Fayetteville Purchases Canadian Nano Technology (Jan 2011)

NanoMech with headquarters in Fayetteville, AR, announced that it has acquired Canadian Nano Technologies LLC, also known as Canano. Canano provides custom engineered nanopowders used in multiple industries including electronics, agriculture, solar energy and aerospace. NanoMech designs and manufactures nanopartide-based additives, coatings and coating deposition systems. This acquisition brings Canano's novel nanomaterial production capability and new knowledge jobs into NanoMech's portfolio, thereby creating important synergies for the company. The acquisition also meant 5 new jobs in Fayetteville with Canano's top staff moving to Fayetteville. According to NanoMech CEO Jim Phillips, if everything goes according to plan, NanoMech will be adding scores of knowledge-based jobs with a salary range of $50,000 to $125,000 a year. NanoMech was founded in 2002.

Fayetteville Startup Finishes Year With Big Funding: $5 Million (Jan 2011)

John James gave up his medical practice to form an e-commerce firm called Acumen Holdings with Terry Turpin, an attorney by trade in 2009. Since its formation, Acumen has grown to 36 employees and now have more than 200 partner brands, including Carhartt, Under Armour, Fisher-Price, Dickies, Timberland and Wrangler, all sold through its numerous consumer sites such as TrailsEdge.com (outdoor wear), ToughWeld.com (work wear), ScrubShopper.com (nursing scrubs) and BabyHabit.com (baby gear). The latest round of funding comes from several investors and will enable the company to add 20 online stores in the next two years and expand its work force. Investors included Noro-Moseley Partners of Atlanta (which is making its first investment in Arkansas); BLH Ventures of Atlanta and Birmingham, AL; and Gravity Ventures Arkansas. These are nationally significant venture capital firms. From the state, Acumen received investment support from the new Arkansas Risk Capital Matching Fund, a program of the Arkansas Development Finance Authority, and state tax credits of 33.3 percent for its investors.

Silicon Solar Solutions Receives National Science Foundation Grant (Jan 2011)

Silicon Solar Solutions, a Fayetteville, AR company based at the University of Arkansas Research and Technology Park, has received a $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. The Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research grant will be used to demonstrate that the company's process for making solar cells can be applied to the rapidly developing field of thin-film solar cells. The company intends to show that its process is a faster and less expensive method for producing the thin-film solar cells. If the Phase 1 research is successful, the company will be able to apply for additional Phase II funding of up to $500,000.

The company was founded in December 2008 after licensing the process developed by researchers in the University of Arkansas College of Engineering. The company currently employs three full time staff and two part-time and Douglas Hutchings, the CEO, says he hopes to hire two more full-time technology workers in the coming months.

Money Is There for Road Projects (Dec 2010)

Over the next three years, more than $442 million is scheduled to be spent improving highways in Washington and Benton counties. The 2010-13 Transportation Improvement Program lists all the region's projects and how much they cost. According to John McLarty, a transportation planner with the Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission, the list is not a wish list, but a compilation of projects that have dedicated state, federal and local funds.

Amongst the projects that will take place in Fayetteville include widening of Arkansas 16 from College Ave to Stone Bridge Rd ($10 million), widening of Arkansas 265 from Arkansas 45 to Joyce Blvd ($15.4 million), and widening of Arkansas 265 from Joyce Blvd to Fayetteville city limits ($15 million)

UAMS Northwest Gets Grant (Dec 2010)

The Walmart Foundation has awarded a $650,000 grant to the UAMS Northwest to be used to enhance distance learning technology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Northwest campus. This distance learning will allow the schools in Fayetteville to share lecturers in Little Rock. The ability to offer the same material on both campuses helps to build a sense of ownership for UAMS-Northwest students. Enrollment is inching up at the Fayetteville campus. Last academic year the first 6 medical students ventured to Fayetteville. Those students were joined this year by 3 additional third-year students. This Fall, 22 third-year pharmacy students will start in Fayetteville. A total of 92 students will enrol in medical, pharmacy, nursing and allied health programs. That number will eventally reach 250 to 300 students. The distance learning grant will help to increase the schools' capacity to educate more health care workers. The Associatio of American Medical Colleges reports that nationwide, physician shortages will jump to 62,900 in five years and 91,500 by 2020.

Grant Funds Health-Care Link (Nov. 2010)

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in August 2010 received 102 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding provided by the US Department of Commerce to create a high-speed data network that will link 474 sites in Arkansas, including health-care providers, universities and community colleges. This new route will share much of the Arkansas Research and Education Optical Network or ARE-ON's cable and route. ARE-ON currently connects 10 of the state's 11 public universities to a high-speed research network at least 2,000 times faster than a standard broadband line. The new network will allow users to share large data files such as medical images or research databases, and it will allow doctors and professors to quickly communicate through high-resolution video with colleagues, pateints and students. Twenty eight million dollars will be spent to construct or lease fiber-optice network routes to serve community colleges; $24 million for 3 years of leased circuit line charges to be paid to broadbank providers; $23 million for network infrastructure; $22 million for telemedicine equipment for hospitals, clinics and home-health sites, and $5 million for network equipment for community colleges. The network will be coming online over the next three years, with institutions becoming active as their network routes are completed.

Liquor World of Fayetteville, Arkansas Receives Honor (Nov. 2010)

Market Watch selected Liquor World of Fayetteville as one of six recipients of Market Leaders 2010. Market Watch is a trade publication published by Shanken Communications which also publishes Wine Spectator magazine. The award recognizes Liquor World as a national market leader in retailing wine, beer, and spirits.

Tyson Mexican Original of Fayetteville Garners Award (Nov. 2010)

Texas-based Toco Bueno recently selected Tyson Mexican Original of Fayetteville as the restaurant chains' Product Vendor of the Year. The criteria for the ward is based on the product's performance during the prior year. Tyson Mexican Original makes flour and corn tortillas and chips and today is the nation's second largest tortilla manufacturer. Taco Bueno is a quick-service restaurant operating in almost 190 locations in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Superior Industries Sales Continue to Grow (Nov 2010)

Strong vehical sales have kept production lines busy at local Superior Industries plants. Fayetteville and Rogers are the only US operations for the Van Nuys, California-based company. They have three factories in Mexico as well. The factories make wheels primarily for Chrysler, Ford, Toyota and General Motors. Revenues were up $72.3 million or 65 percent to $183.7 million this quarter compared to $111.4 million the same period last year. Net income was $10.4 million compared to a loss of $12.7 million the same quarter last year. There was an average of 782 employees in the Fayetteville plant now compared to573 employees at the beginning of the year. Superior continues to expand into India through its investment in Synergies Castings, an Indian aluminum wheel marker. Superior owns 8.7 percent of share in the Indian company.

US Biomed Grants Go To 3 Firms in Arkansas (Nov. 2010)

The US Department of Health and Human Services awarded three Arkansas companies a total of $730,000 in grants for biomedical research. The Therapeutic Discovery Project Program, which is a part of the overhaul of the US health-care system, awarded a grant of $244,000 to Pacific Vet Group-USA Inc. of Fayetteville. The company creates products for the poultry industry. The other two recipients are Stage I Dignostics Inc. of Little Rock and BioStrategies LC of Jonesboro. They received $241,000 and $244,000 respectively.

Fayetteville Chamber Member and Architect Tim Maddox Labeled a Rising Star (Nov. 2010)

Fayetteville chamber member and architect Tim Maddox was recently recognized by the folks at Gargen & Gun magazine. Mr. Maddox, a principal at deMx Architecture, was tabbed as one of 21 "rising stars who are making us all look good" in the August-September issue, which focused on Southern style and culture. He is from Jonesboro and attended the University of Arkansas' Fay Jones School of Architecture.

Arkansas Schools To Team Up And Use $24 Million For Research (Oct. 2010)

Seven Arkansas universities will use $24 million in federal funds to collaborate and conduct research in solar, wind and bio-based energy. The Arkansas Science and Technology Authority will contribute $4 million with the award from the National Science Foundation to create a five-year project, phase two of the Advancing and Supporting Science, Engineering and Technology initiative. The partnership focuses on creating jobs by supporting university-based research that has the potential to launch new companies. The funding will create two research centers and extend funding for a third. The existing Plant-Powered Production Center will continue its focus on plant-related research. The two new centers will focus on solar energy: the Green Renewable Energy Efficient Nanoplasmonic Solar Cells Center and the Vertically Integrated Center for Transformative Energy Research. The project will be overseen by researchers at the University of Arkansas campuses at Fayetteville, Little Rock, Fort Smith and Pine Bluff; the UA Division of Agriculture, The University of Central Arkansas, Arkansas State University at Jonesboro, and Philander Smith College in Little Rock.

BlueInGreen Wins Innovation Award

BlueInGreen LLC of Fayetteville, Arkansas has won the Innovation Technology Award given by the Water Environment Federation. BlueInGreen received the award during the Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference in New Orleans. Water Environment Federation is an international technical and educational water-quality organization. It has 36,000 individual members and 75 affiliated member assocation representing water quality preofessionals around the world.

BlueInGreen was founded by two UA professors and is being recognized for its dissolved oxygen process that has applications in remediation of lakes, reservoirs, rivers and streams in addtion to wastewater treatment. The company currently employs 15 full and part time employees. The company was founded in 2004 by Scott Osborn and Marty Matlock.

Fayetteville Electronics Firm Earns Grant (Oct. 2010)

Arkansas Power Electronics International (APEI) of Fayetteville will receive a $500,000 US Department of Energy grant to continue developing high temperature silicon-carbon power modules, a project that has been recognized as one of the world's top 100 new technology breakthroughts by R&D Magazine. The grant will be used to bring the technology into commercial production and support an estimated 25 jobs which will be created over the next one to three years. An additional 50 jobs are expected to be created in 3 to 5 years as a result of this project.

Silicon Solar Solutions LLC of Fayetteville Wins Event (Oct. 2010)

Silicon Solar Solutions LLC, a Fayetteville, Arkansas based company, was selected as the grand prize winner at the Young Presidents Organization Dragons Den event held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The event was a signature eent at the biennial meeting of the organization and it provided startup companies with exposure to a group ofindividuals who are ctively seeking investment opportuntities. The event invited the best four teams from Canada and the United States to pitch their invesmtnet opportunity. Silicon Solar Solutions was declared the winner and received $5,000 cash.

AEO announces Green Technology Grant Recipients:

The Arkansas Energy Office (AEO) a division of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, has announced that FIVE Fayetteville, AR companies are the recipients of just over $1 million in funding through the Arkansas Green Technology Grant Program. The Fayetteville companies are:

LGW, INC. - $290,496 for a pilot project to demonstrate battery-based storage systems.
Phigenics - $300,000 for build out of a water analysis facility in commercial and industrial cooling towers and heat exchangers that will directly save 15 to 25 percent per facility in utility costs.
NextGen Illumination - $337,500 for a statewide demonstration of LED lighting.
Cooper Power systems - $60,000 to replace an annealing oven with a high-efficiency oven.
Bekaert - $100,000 for a facility lighting retrofit.
