Government

The City of Fayetteville operates under the Mayor/Council (Aldermanic) form of government. Eight alderman are elected (2 from each of 4 wards) to serve 4-year terms. The current Aldermen are Adella Gray, Brenda Thiel, Kyle Cook, Nancy Allen, Robert Rhoads, Bobby Ferrell, Shirley Lucas and Lioneld Jordan. The mayor is elected "at large" and has a 4-year term. The current mayor is Dan Coody, and he serves as Chief Executive Officer of the City and has a statutory duty to oversee the enforcement of City policies, ordinances, administrative rules and state laws, as well as to direct City offices and employees to discharge their duties. Mayor Coody presides over meetings of the City Council and has no vote but does have veto power over City Council. However, a two-thirds vote by the council can override the mayor's veto. The City Clerk/Treasurer, City Attorney and District Judge are also elected "at large"
