The Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce is proud to present our “Chamber Champions” series. In 2016, our Chamber team will be volunteering over 350 hours at local non-profits throughout Northwest Arkansas. We are proud to support our non-profits and hope our efforts will inspire our Chamber members to reach out in our community and volunteer.

Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller in Atlanta, Georgia. Unlike popular thought, Habitat for Humanity does not give away homes. Instead, the partner families invest hundreds of hours by working alongside other volunteers and Habitat homeowners. This “sweat equity” helps all Habitat families get into the home of their dreams. Once their home is complete, the new homeowner purchases the home through an affordable mortgage payment plan directly through Habitat.

When I arrived at the Habitat office on St. Patrick’s Day, I had a chance to look at the closets and storage areas we were tasked to clean out. They receive donations daily and there was a lot to do! Judy, Sandy and I spent the day cleaning out and re-organizing the events room, office supply room, and donations. In Habitat style, they know how to re-use and re-purpose anything that is donated from our community. Anything that is not given directly to the families or used in the build site is sold in their ReStore, which is in the same building as their office. By the end of the day, we made about 60 trips up and down the stairs, making sure everything we found had a purpose.
